This is the composition of committee members of WALTA.

 

President - Dr Augusto Zimmermann

Dr Augusto Zimmermann (LLB (PUC-Rio), LLM cum laude (PUC-Rio), PhD (Monash University)) is Senior Lecturer and former Associate Dean (Research) and Director of Postgraduate Studies at the School of Law at Murdoch University. He is also a Professor of Law (adjunct) at the University of Notre Dame Australia, Sydney.

Dr Zimmermann is also a Law Reform Commissioner with the Law Reform Commission of Western Australia; a Vice-President of the Australian Society of Legal Philosophy (ASLP); President of the Western Australian Legal Theory Association (WALTA); and Editor of the Western Australian Jurist law journal.

Dr Zimmermann has been awarded the 2012 Vice Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Research, and also been awarded two consecutive Murdoch School of Law Dean’s Research Awards, in 2010 and 2011.

He has been included, together with only twelve other Australian academics and policy experts, in the prestigious ‘Policy Experts’ – the Heritage Foundation’s directory for locating knowledgeable authorities and leading policy institutes actively involved in a broad range of public policy issues, both in the United States and worldwide

Twice nominated for the Vice Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Teaching and Learning, Dr Zimmermann undoubtedly is a favourite among students. He has received the Law Lecturer of the Year Award 2013 by Murdoch Student Law Society, in recognition for the outstanding level of teaching, ongoing service and personal contribution provided to his students. 

 

Vice President - Lyndsay Barrett

Lyndsay Barrett, LLB (Hons), GradCertBusAdmin (Murdoch University) is a Law Graduate at Cornerstone Legal, Vice-President of the Western Australian Legal Theory Association (WALTA), and alumni of Murdoch University. Lyndsay has recently started her legal career in commercial litigation and is involved in matters such as Town Planning, Environmental Law, Land Compensation and Local Government Law.

Ranked in the highest 5% of Murdoch University Undergraduates, Lyndsay was awarded the prestigious Sarah Meddin Memorial Prize in Legal Theory in 2014. She was also the recipient of the Herbert Smith Freehills Prize in 2013 (for achieving the highest overall academic performance in Constitutional Law, Contract Law, and Australian Administrative Law) and the 2013 LexisNexis Prize in Constitutional Law.

Lyndsay’s passions include Jurisprudence, Constitutional Law and Federalism. 

She is also committed to ameliorating unreasonable encroachments on fundamental democratic rights and freedoms – including the right to own property and the right to freedom of expression. During her studies, Lyndsay was actively involved in WALTA, and regularly attended conferences such as The Samuel Griffith Society Conference in 2015, the Australian Society of Legal Philosophy (ASLP) Conference in 2014 and the 2014 Free Speech Symposium.

Lyndsay is honoured to have been elected Vice-President and looks forward to a bright future with WALTA.

Secretary - Bianca Talbot

Bianca is a third year student studying a Bachelor of Laws with a Minor in Politics and International Relations at Murdoch University. She is also a Mannkal Scholar and has consequentially attended conferences across the country such as:

  •  The 2015 ALS Friedman Conference in Sydney; and
  • The 2015 Samuel Griffith Society Conference in Canberra.

She will soon be travelling to Melbourne over the summer break to intern at the Institute of Public Affairs where she will have the opportunity to assist with their Freedom Watch Project.

Bianca’s passions include: legal theory, constitutional law, free speech, protection of private property rights, freedom of (and from) religion, health and fitness, reading and learning new skills.

She is extremely concerned about the Federal Government’s increasing intrusion into the private sphere of Australian citizens’ lives and its constant erosion of our Federalist system. She is very excited about the potential of WALTA and is enthusiastic about working towards taking back our individual liberties.

 

Treasurer - Clarence Ling

Clarence Ling (LLB (Murdoch), GradDipLegPrac (College of Law)) is an alumnus of Murdoch University Law School, former inaugural College of Law Alumni Association (WA) Secretary and a former lawyer. He has now branched into international real estate through Kozin Real Estate and is a registered Perth real estate agent. He also runs a digital marketing business, Clarence Ling Administrative & Secretarial Services (CLASS), which offers digital marketing services for real estate agencies and small business, also offering electronic administrative assistance. He runs his business on his website clarenceling.com.

Clarence Ling has served on a few incorporated associations including The Association of Malaysians in Western Australia (AMWA), where he played an integral part of revamping their Constitution document. He was also formerly assisting an informal association of a hundred strong Perth lawyers and was Secretary of a Victorian bodybuilding association in the past. Clarence thus has some experience in running incorporated associations in Australia.  

Clarence Ling has a diverse and ever evolving skill set, including web design; he builds and runs the management of WALTA's website.
